THE BUTTERFLY VALLEY On the western side of the island of
Rhodes, approximately ten kilometers south west from
“Diagoras” airport, we find the Valley of Butterflies.
The valley is split by the Pelican
River and lies directly below
Kalopetra Monastery.
In 1928, an Italian company was
established a little further down the valley in an area
called Kalamonas. This company developed the
valley.
Since 2002 the valley is under the
jurisdiction of the Municipality of Petaloudes and combined
with Lindos and 7 Springs it’s one of the best sightseeing
on the
Island of Rhodes.
Valley contains millions of butterflies
during the summer months, especially during July and August
when the migration of the insect has been completed.
These butterflies
belong to the species Panaxia Quadripunctaria. They live
wherever they can find the storax tree ( Liquidibar
Orientalis) with their characteristic strong scent.
The valley is a
beauty spot in its own right with walkways, winding rivers,
flowing streams tumbling into waterfalls rock pools, rustic
bridges and resting places, cafes and charming gift shops.
It's a pleasure to come here even in the heat of the day.
The Valley has also
a
Museum of Natural History, for
all those that interested in the world of animals and
insects. There is also a large number of butterfly pieces on
exhibit, it’s shown it’s unique attributes and
characteristics.
